  • The $500,000 Glenn L. and Sally P. Ramsdell Memorial Chair for Accounting was established in the college through a bequest from the estate of Jacqueline Eugenia Ramsdell
• July 2007
  • The College of Business was named one of the top ten research institutions nationwide for faculty scholarly productivity in business administration according to a study by Academic Analytics
  • Dean Lynda de la Viña received the Ford Salute to Education award during Ford Motor Company’s annual banquet
• June 2007 – The College of Business received reaccreditation in business and separate reaccreditation in accounting from AACSB International, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business
• May 2007 – The College of Business was nationally ranked for its research in the areas of finance (55th nationally, 61st worldwide), management (80th nationally) and marketing (40th nationally, 43rd worldwide)

  • August A. Busch III , former chairman of Anheuser-Busch Companies, Inc., was the keynote speaker for the college’s second annual Signature Speaker Series
  • Jeanie Wyatt , MBA’86, CEO and chief investment officer of South Texas Money Management, Ltd., received the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award at the college’s Signature Speaker Series event
  • A.J. Rodriguez , ’98, MBA’00, president and CEO of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, received the college’s first Young Alumnus of the Year award

  • The college held a soft opening for its new Center for Student Professional Development

2006

• December 2006 – The college launches the joint Center for Innovation and Technology Entrepreneurship with the College of Engineering. Dr. Cory Hallam was named the first director of the center
• October 2006 – UTSA College of Business Receives the Brillante Award for Educational Excellence from the National Society of Hispanic MBAs
• October 11, 2006 – The College of Business was named one of the top 10 MBA programs for minority students by the Princeton Review
• August 2006 – Dr. Dana Forgione named the Janey S. Briscoe Endowed Chair in the Business of Health
• July 2006 – The college launches an inaugural Brazilian immersion program for undergraduate business students. The course was taught by Dr. Victoria Jones, director of the Business Studies for the Americas program and associate professor of marketing.
• May 12, 2006 – The first class of business doctoral students participated in commencement exercises
• January 2006 – The college’s second doctoral program, a Ph.D. in Applied Statistics with a concentration in biostatistics, was approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The first class will begin in Fall 2006

  • The Finance Department was ranked 82nd in the world according to business school research by a study from the University of Texas at Dallas
  • The MBA program was named one of the Top 10 minority MBA programs in the country by the Princeton Review
• November 16, 2005
  • The College of Business launches the inaugural Signature Speaker Series featuring Yahoo Co-founder Jerry Yang with a lead gift from Wachovia
  • During the Signature Speaker Series, the college awarded its first Leadership and Service Award to Jim Kahan and its first Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award to Ernest Bromley
• October 28, 2005 – The college’s first doctoral student, Ju Xiang, finance, successfully defended his dissertation to complete his doctoral degree
• June 2005
  • Lynda de la Viña named first female and Hispanic Dean of the College of Business
  • Undergraduate human resource students place second nationally in a management case study competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.
• May 5, 2005 – Business Auditorium dedicated in honor of benefactor Richard S. Liu
• April 2005 – Human resource students win the Texas HR Games competition and place second regionally

2004

• September 2004 – Dr. Bruce Bublitz steps down as dean of the UTSA College of Business and Dr. Lynda Y. de la Viña is named interim dean and Peter Flawn Professor of Economics.
• May 2004 – Business Scholars Program graduates first class of students.
• January 2004
  • State Demographer Steve Murdock joins the College of Business faculty as the Lutcher Brown Distinguished Chair in Management Science and Statistics
  • College offers first business course in Spanish, “Principles of Marketing”

2003

• August 2003 – The College received a $2 million gift from Richard Liu, the chairman of Superior Holdings Limited of Hong Kong. The gift will be used to further expand the Liu’s Family Foundation U.S.-China Business Education Initiative that Liu established in 1998 with a $1 million contribution
• June 2003
  • The College of Business receives approval to offer a Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree in infrastructure assurance and a concentration in infrastructure assurance in the Master’s of Science degree in Information Technology in Fall 2003
  • The College of Business receives approval to offer a concentration in project management as part of the M.B.A. program in Fall 2003

2002

• August 2002
  • First class of 18 Ph.D. students begins in the College of Business
  • The College of Business began offering a Bachelor’s of Business Administration degree in actuarial science
  • Business Scholars Program established in college. The mentoring program is designed to help students make a smooth transition from high school to college and on to graduation
• May 2002 – Jerry Keating, chair and professor in the Department of Management Science and Statistics, was named a Peter Flawn Professor. This is one of the highest honors UTSA bestows on a faculty member
• January 2002 – Alumnus William E. Morrow, founder, vice chairman and CEO of Grande Communications, and his wife, Traci, donated 100,000 shares of Grande Communications stock to the College of Business

2001

• September 2001 – Due to university-wide academic restructuring, the College of Business divides its three academic divisions into seven departments. The new departments are accounting, economics, finance, information systems, management, management science and marketing.
• August 2001 – Business students now have the opportunity to study abroad in Italy thanks to a partnership the college has formed with the Consortium of Universities for International Business Studies.
• June 2001 – The Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security established in UTSA’s College of Business.
• May 2001 –  The Ph.D. in business administration receives approval by the Texas Board of Regents.

2000

• August 2000
  • First group of visiting Chinese M.B.A. students begin coursework as part of the Liu’s Family Foundation U.S.-China Business Education Initiative
  • Chak-Tong Chau, associate professor of accounting, is the first College of Business faculty member to receive a Fulbright award.
• July 1, 2000 – Bruce Bublitz begins tenure as the fourth Dean of the College of Business.

1999

• August 1999 – Bartlett Cocke, Jr. serves as executive-in-residence in the College of Business
• February 1999 – A Master of Arts degree in economics and a Master of Science degree in information technology are approved for UTSA’s College of Business

1998

• December 1998 – UTSA’s College of Business receives a $1 million gift from Hong Kong businessman Richard Liu. It is the largest single donation from an individual in UTSA’s history
• November 1998 – A Master of Science degree in finance is approved for the College of Business
• September 1998
  • A new M.B.A. concentration in marketing management is approved for UTSA’s College of Business
  • Two new undergraduate concentrations implemented in the College of Business, a B.B.A. in general business and a B.B.A. in management with a concentration in small business and entrepreneurship
  • Business Update began as the college’s first electronic e-mail newsletter to faculty, staff, students and advisory council members.
• June 1998 – A new M.B.A. concentration in healthcare management approved for UTSA’s College of Business

1997

• August 1997
  • The Executive M.B.A. program begins at UTSA. This innovative new graduate program focuses on personal leadership for business executives. Twenty-two students in the first class
  • Dale Truett named the Ashbel Smith Professor of economics. His term is for five years
  • Ronald Rutherford is the college’s first holder of the Elmo James Burke, Jr. Chair in the Management of Building Development
  • The first Scholarship Salute was hosted by the College of Business.
• April 1997 – UTSA’s College of Business receives reaccreditation of its undergraduate and graduate programs by the AACSB. The accounting division also received initial and separate accreditation of its programs.
• March 1997 –  Ultramar Diamond Shamrock Corp. donated $100,000 to fund the executive master’s in business administration degree program at UTSA.
• February 1997 – Dedication of the Business Building. Designed by the architectural firm of Ford Powell & Carson. The 205,000-square-foot building is home to the College of Business, a campus visitor’s center and extensive computer facilities.

1996

May 1996 – North American Graduate Student Exchange Program begins at UTSA. The NAFTA class is held in conjunction with La Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico and the University of Calgary in Canada. Six graduate students are selected to participate in the program from each university. The class runs for three weeks with one week spent in each country.

1994

• December 1994 – Groundbreaking for the Business Building.
• August 1994 – Business Foundations program initiated in the Center for Professional Excellence. This certificate program provides participants with basic business knowledge and skill competencies required to develop a business mindset.
• July 1994 – The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in tourism management at UTSA.
• May 1994 – Keith Dever was the first graduate to earn a master of science in the management of technology degree from UTSA’s College of Business.

1992

• September 1992 – Center for Professional Excellence started. Robert Lengel appointed Director of the Center. First Leadership Challenge class began for undergraduate students
• August 1992 – College began offering courses in tourism management
• July 1992 – Master of Science degree in management of technology approved by Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, first of its kind in Texas. Joint program between the College of Business and the College of Sciences and Engineering. Program began in 1993-94 academic year with 30 students
• May 1992 – UTSA receives $500,000 endowment commitment from Anheuser-Busch Foundation to develop degree program in tourism management. UTSA and the Universidad Nacional Autonomous de Mexico (UNAM) signed a formal educational exchange agreement

1991

• August 1991
  • New concentrations introduced to the M.B.A. program. These included business economics, finance, information systems, management of technology and management science
  • UTSA becomes first university in Texas to receive U.S. Department of Education grant to internationalize College of Business
  • Undergraduate enrollment 4,547

1990

• November 1990 – New Accountant ranked UTSA graduates fourth nationwide for passing all subjects taken of the CPA exam
• August 1990 Graduate enrollment 552

1989

• August 1989
  • First diplomat-in-residence, William Spruce, joined the college. College began offering an M.B.A. in international business
  • Business Ethics Symposium established as a joint venture between the College of Business and the UTSA Methodist Student Movement. In 1993, United Commercial Realty–San Antonio, Inc. became the sponsor of this program.

1987

• August 1987 – John Holmgreen, former president of Alamo Iron Works, was the first contributor to the Corporate Sponsor Program
• May 1987
  • Jesse Baker appointed the first chairman of the College of Business Advisory Council. First College of Business Advisory Council Faculty Awards ceremony held
  • James F. Gaertner named Dean and serves until 2000

1985

February 1985 – First endowed chair in the College of Business established. The Elmo James Burke Jr. endowed chair in management of building development created with a $500,000 gift from Burke family and friends.

1982

February 1982 – Beta Gamma Sigma chapter established, international scholastic honor society for students at AACSB-accredited business schools.

1981

January 1981 – Lila Flory-Truett becomes Director of the Division of Economics and Finance–the first woman named division director.

1980

UTSA College of Business received its first accreditation from the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) for both graduate and undergraduate programs, within the shortest allowable period, which at that time was five years. There were 2,400 undergraduate business students and 275 graduate students enrolled at that time.

1976

UTSA accepted the first freshman.

1975

UTSA began offering upper-division undergraduate courses at the Humanities-Business Building on the 1604 Campus.

1974

August 1974 – First commencement. Degrees awarded to 82 students. Susan Bolado was the first graduate with a master’s of business administration degree.

1973

UTSA began offering graduate programs in the Koger Center during the summer of 1973. Master’s degrees were offered in business administration, bicultural-bilingual studies, biology, education, English as a second language, environmental management, mathematics and systems design and Spanish.

1972

• E.D. “Doug” Hodo named Dean and served in this role until 1987
• Koger Center campus established
• First 38 degree programs approved by Texas College & University System Coordinating Board
• Construction begins on UTSA’s 1604 Campus

1971

First Dean of the College of Business, Louis J. Rodriguez was hired. In 1972 Rodriguez and his family moved to Texas, where he was the fourth person hired at the newly opened University of Texas at San Antonio. He began as Dean of the College of Business and later was named Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculties.

1969

Texas Legislature establishes UTSA.
