Doctoral Admissions

Doctoral admission is ongoing, please check the UTSA Admissions program page to confirm deadlines for your intended program.

The deadline to receive all admission materials is as follows:

  • February 1 for full-time Ph.D. programs for admission in the fall semester
  • February 1 and September 1 for the part-time Ph.D. in Information Systems program, where admission is available for both the fall and spring semesters

Admissions

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. The Ph.D. Program Committee in the major areas will evaluate applicants to the Ph.D. programs based on several factors including academic achievement, standardized test scores, employment history, a personal statement, letters of recommendation and possibly an interview. All applicants must submit the following material.

  • Completed Application Form: Includes loading all required documents, paying your application fee* and clicking on the “Submit” button.
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework completed.
  • Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores or Graduate Records Examination (GRE) scores from a recent (no more than five years) administration of the exam.
  • International applicant TOEFL/IELTS test scores: An applicant from a country where the first language is not English unless a bachelor’s degree or higher was earned in an English-speaking country, must have a minimum score of 550 on paper-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), 79 on internet-based TOEFL, or 6.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
  • Letters of Recommendation: Three letters of recommendation from academic or professional sources familiar with the applicant’s background (at least one letter must be written by an academic).
  • Résumé or curriculum vitae
  • Statement of personal and academic goals: A personal statement of academic interests and goals, there is no specific format requirements but your letter should identify why you are interested in this program.

Admission to the doctoral program is based upon the applicant’s entire record, and selection is made on a competitive basis. Applicants must comply with all university and Carlos Alvarez College of Business application requirements.

*The Alvarez College of Business will cover the fees for business doctoral program applications on behalf of active-duty military or veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, or an applicant who has attended a Ph.D. Project Conference. Eligible applicants will receive a single-use coupon code that can be entered in the payment field of the online application. To request an application fee waiver, please complete and submit the Request to Waive Doctoral Application Fee form.

Admission for Ph.D. in Applied Statistics

In addition to the above requirements candidates for the Ph.D. in Applied Statistics must have a bachelor’s or master’s in mathematics, statistics or a closely-related field. And, they must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher in the last 60 hours of coursework.

Technology Requirements

The Carlos Alvarez College of Business requires computer access for course-related activities, which may include, but is not limited to assignment write-ups, web resource access, Blackboard access, video conferencing and online exams.
