Welcome to the Department of Finance in the Carlos Alvarez College of Business at UTSA. Our department offers B.B.A. degrees in Finance and in Real Estate Finance and Development. Our graduate degree programs include a Master of Science in Finance and a Master of Science in Finance with a concentration in Real Estate. Our M.S. Finance programs are included on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s STEM Designated Degree Program list. We also have a decade old Ph.D. program. We serve a large number of students at each level.
Finance is an applied area that studies the ways in which individuals, business entities and organizations allocate resources over time and make decisions in the presence of uncertainty. This includes quantitative analysis of financial markets and financial decision making using mathematical, statistical and computational models. Techniques of financial engineering have become indispensable to a wide spectrum of business activities including investment banking, commercial banking, corporate finance, portfolio management, risk management and insurance, and management and decision in the real estate industry.
Faculty
Professors in the Department of Finance have wide ranging expertise including:
- Corporate Finance: the study of how corporations raise capital and make investment decisions;
- Asset Pricing and Investments: the study of how security prices and interest rates are determined in the market;
- International Finance: the study of international corporate finance and investment; and
- Real Estate Finance: the study of decision and investment analysis in the real estate industry.
Our faculty strives to produce a broad range of finance-related research that addresses topics of interest to academic researchers, practitioners and policy makers. We communicate that research both through peer-reviewed journal publications, and through the development of relevant and rigorous BBA, MBA and Executive Education programs. We also train and mentor future finance scholars through our Ph.D. program.
