What is an Academic Credit Internship?

In the Carlos Alvarez College of Business at The University of Texas at San Antonio, an academic internship is a credit-bearing, career-related work experience of limited duration in which a student gains real-world experience while earning credit toward their degree.

Internships may take place in a non-profit organization, a government office or a for-profit business and must include training and supervision from an industry professional.

An academic credit internship requires a student to perform scholarly work in conjunction with an approved internship experience. The academic internship must be supervised by a faculty member, and the scope and nature of the academic work must be defined and approved by the faculty member before the student can register for an academic credit internship.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) defines an internship as a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting.

Apply for an Academic Credit Internship

Why get credit for your internship?

  • Gain real world experiences while earning credit toward your degree.
  • Determine if the industry and the profession is the best career option to pursue.
  • Network with professionals in the field.
  • Potential for a full-time job offer at the end of the internship based on your performance.

When should I do an internship?

It’s never too early to do an internship! Academic credit internships may be completed within Fall, Spring or Summer academic terms and must be approved first in order to earn credit.

If you are not eligible to obtain credit at this time, we strongly urge you to complete the internship for the professional experience.

An internship is a short-term employment assignment, during the summer or regular school year that is related to your major or career goal. Interns work in a professional setting under the supervision of a practicing professional.

You are encouraged to do multiple internships to get a feel for various companies within an industry. Many internships will offer a competitive pay rate, while others will be unpaid. Evaluate your individual academic and financial situation before accepting an internship offer.

Internships for graduate students are extremely important and quite common, especially for students who do not intend to pursue a Ph.D. following completion of a master’s degree. The stakes are high; graduate internships are where graduate students can make important networking connections, secure mentoring relationships with senior-level executives and further increase the practical knowledge they will need to enter their desired field.

Organizations that work with interns at the graduate level will offer a more robust experience, beyond the undergraduate level, to keep graduate students challenged and engaged.

What organizations look for in a graduate-level intern:

• Trustworthy
• Innovative
• Resourceful
• Take on opportunities
• Work under tight deadlines
