About

Dr. Maho Sonmez joined the Alvarez College of Business in August 2013 as a Fixed Term Track (FTT) faculty at the Department of Management Science and Statistics. Prior to joining the UTSA, Dr. Sonmez worked as a senior lecturer in quantitative methods at Oxford Brookes University, UK (2012-2013) and before that he was a lecturer in Management Science and Statistics at Loughborough University, UK (2004-2010).

Dr. Sonmez teaches a variety of quantitative courses both at undergraduate and graduate levels. He was part of the project in summer 2017 to convert CBK courses into online versions for the fully online Cyber Security degree program. He used his online course development experience to help colleagues to transition to online teaching in Spring 2020 thereby becoming a departmental online faculty champion. He also mentored faculty colleagues from different colleges at UTSA about online course design and delivery. He continues to mentor the incoming new FTT faculty at the Alvarez College of Business.  Dr. Sonmez has been serving as a faculty senator representing ACOB FTT faculty at the University Senate. He has also served as departmental representative in both undergraduate and graduate committees. Dr. Sonmez has been supervising undergraduate students for their undergraduate research projects.

Dr. Sonmez is interested in doing research on the effectiveness of teaching across different modalities (online vs in person); managerial decision-making processes, evaluation and selection of suppliers and professional service providers. He also researches intellectual property violations, such as copyright and trademark infringements, especially in developing countries.
